In 1957, after years of frustration with the local contractors serving the design overload of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Art Anderson decided he could do better. With the help of his wife Bea and designer Frank Gallenger, Anderson and Gallenger was born. The first few years typified a startups vulnerabilities competing for small drawing packages in fixed price competitions with a developing staff. The first generation Americans were able to survive largely through Bea’s fiscal sagacity and early establishment of a family environment. As years progressed three of four of the Anderson children, a nephew and extended family would find learning experiences while progressing through school.
In 1974 the naval yard established term contracts for support beginning a ten year period of growth that included major design support contracts in Bremerton, Philadelphia, Portsmouth and with PERA CV, the navy’s planning arm for aircraft carriers. In this role Art Anderson helped create the carrier SLEP or Service Life Extension Program. In 1978 this would open the door to commercial programs as the steel electric class Washington State Ferries neared the end of their 50 year life. Following Art Anderson planning, these same vessels continue to serve today.
In 1976 Eric Anderson returned to Bremerton and joined the firm after the seagoing obligations of his U.S. Naval Academy commission. Primarily a naval design firm, Art Anderson had occasionally extended licensed engineering talents to projects such as a community theater and municipal improvements. The younger Anderson marked the beginning of a transition as Bea relinquished the business end and employees had another Anderson with engineering interests.
Retiring in 1981 Art saw an established naval design firm become the base for diversification and transition to broader consulting roles. Through the eighties more than a dozen former design firm entrepreneurs sought the nourishing Petri dish that grew out of a transition into second generation leadership. Top level talents included architecture, civil engineering, industrial, naval architectural and construction management. As the cold war wound down Art Anderson had nearly completed diluting naval design support to a complementary core competency.
Remaining a family owned business had enabled opportunistic and non traditional business approaches in established traditional fields. As Art Anderson realized the unique view and insights available from its diverse and talented professionals the firm began chunking their knowledge to perform leveraged knowledge in areas such as value engineering, transportation planning, forensic engineering and practical research, all on the strength of a broad business base.
As we move forward, Art Anderson will continue to be firmly grounded in concept and detail design with an unmatched array of disciplines and set the stage for improving the industry of engineering. The body of knowledge inherent in Art Andersons’ work and people will be the test bed for leveraging enterprise experience, across disciplines and international borders.

Art Anderson is a family owned company run by President & CEO Ben Anderson, grandson of our founder, Art Anderson. Our employees have been with the company for over 15 years on average, a true testament to our commitment to treating our team as part of the larger Anderson family.
Ben Anderson, President & CEO
Ben is responsible for all aspects of the firm’s operation. He has a strong background in design and operational engineering that complements his exceptional leadership experience. Ben received his Bachelor’s degree from the United States Coast Guard Academy and Master degrees in Mechanical Engineering and in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan.
As a Project Manager and Naval Architect with Art Anderson, Ben led and provided engineering services for new vessel construction, vessel modification, operational analysis, and vessel construction management projects. He is a USCG Officer, formerly active duty, now serving in the reserves conducting vessel inspections for the Puget Sound Sector. While on active duty, he was a Senior Port Engineer and certified Contracting Officer Representative responsible for oversight of all contracted maintenance for California’s 23 patrol boats and high-endurance cutters. He served as inspector for multiple dry dock evolutions with contract values exceeding $25M. On other assignments, he conducted fleet maintenance and liaison activities, and was the Engineering Officer for the USCGC ACTIVE, where he drafted a dockside availability package valued at $400K and oversaw two center-section overhauls of the main diesel engines.
Eric Anderson, Board Chair
In his three decades as President & CEO Eric achieved an in-depth diversification of the Firm’s engineering and architectural talent and expanded the breadth of services offered to defense, government, public and private clients. Designs ranged from city hall to sewage treatment and discharge, to submarine and aircraft carriers, and to high efficiency passenger ferries. In those years, more than one thousand professional and technical employees learned to excel in an environment where engineering was never cookbook. Concurrently Eric served on regional transportation boards including Seattle Transit and PSRC, chaired boards of the Armed Service YMCA, Washington State Professional Engineers, Bremerton Housing Authority and Bremerton Chamber of Commerce. He lent his services on several other boards including the first years of forming Leadership Kitsap, and The Olympic Peninsula Private Industry Council, among others.
Art Anderson is a Seaport-e Prime Contractor, offering our services to US Navy organizations in Region 7 Northwest.
